What Happened?
During the Nanjing Massacre alot happened. But alot of major things happened before hand that lead up to the massacre that killed thousands of innocent people.
August 13 Japan attacked Shanghai leaving 3,000 dead.
August 15 1937 sirens go off in Nanjing and then bombs land in the city
the following week a huge number of the 1937 westerners living in Nanjing at the time, fled home to america. only 15 Americans stayed behind to help.
November 13 1937: the fall of Shanghai
November 15 1937 the 15 westerners unite and create a Safety Zone even though the Japanese Army did not grant it when they asked for permission .

December 8 1937: there was 5 air raids on monday and 3 on tuesday before hand, a total of 61 air raids.
a day later, the amount came up to 114.
December 11 1937 Japan gets to the south gate and breaks into the city.
When the Japanese army ran through the streets, many of the refugees had not made it to the saftey Zone yet, many people where shot from behind while running for their lives.
Girls and women where raped and then killed.
Shops where raided and burnt.
Soliders stripped from their uniforms and put on civilian clothes and hide in the refugee camps. Because of this, Japanese Army officals didn't know who where Soldiers and who where not. So many innocent men where tied up, brought out of town, and executed.
December 14 1937 Japanese enter the Safety Zone to search for Chinese soliders in hiding.
December 17 1937 Commanding general, Matsui formally enters the city.
-Japanese put up posters about how great life was in Nanjing now. They gave refugees food and candy, made a playground for kids and played with
them, trying to make it look like everything was fine and perfect.
- they would go into the camps and give children and doctors candy and take pictures of those things to show how great it all was, while other
soldiers where out back raping women.
January 1 1938 new years, the Japanese hold their own ceremony.
February 4 1938: refugees are sent back home, after Japanese have promised they have restored everything.

February 18 1938:
